Four Friends: Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Bryan Hunt & Ralph Gibson

Four Friends is the type of exhibitions that museums generally mount only after the fact, when the artists are deceased, and curators and art historians begin to study the connections between and influences among a particular set of artists, probing to understand how the work is influenced by an artist’s circle of friends, living environment, travel, and patrons. Contemporary art curators need to reconsider that in looking at new art purely in terms of visual relationships, no matter how conceptual or esoteric, one curatorially divorces art from the artist.
