Highlights of the 1970-71 Art Season

This is our seventh annal summer Highlights Exhibition. We have selected two or three works from each of the twenty-six artists who we feel had the most exciting and significant one-man or one-woman shows this year in New York City art galleries. Eleven of the artists had their first show this year. The trend toward Lyrical Abstraction which became apparent in Highlights two year ago continued this year; an overall “post-modern” soft look seems to have emerged as an ongoing movement. Despite the denunciation of art as an object by the practitioners of conceptual and ephemeral art, exciting and significant works of art are being created and continue to interest the public in art galleries and museums.

Artists: Richard Anuszkiewicz, Anne Arnold, Helène Aylon, Jake Berthot, Rosemarie Castoro, John Chamberlain, Fred Eversley, Manny Farber, Sam Francis, Ray Johnson, Lila Katzen, Forrest Myers, Doug Ohlson, Claes Oldenburg, Herbert Perr, Stephen Posen, Peter Reginato, Garry Rich, Jay Rosenblum, Lucas Samaras, Herbert Schiffrin, Alan Shields, Jack Tworkov, David von Schlegell, Chris Wilmarth, Jack Youngerman
