Language in Art

Words as image, words as symbol, words as their own subject matter-whatever the form, intent, or style - they have become a linguistic presence in contemporary art. Artists have used word or word fragments in combination with images throughout the history of art as early as the Middle Ages. The word artists in this exhibition have moved from the self-referential quality of much 1960’s art and have become oriented to their audience.
