Mathematics, the natural and social sciences, literature and language, music and the visual arts–every device human beings use to describe and rationalize the world around them–depend upon basic recognition and subsequent definition of pattern. The drawings of Janet Cohen and John F. Simon, Jr. highlight how artistic impulse is also a result of the basic human interest in finding pattern and order within the enormous variety and seeming chaos of our universe.
