Aldrich Fund Acquisitions for the Museum of Modern Art 1959 through 1969

This exhibition presents a selection from some 110 paintings, sculpture, and drawings acquired by the Museum of Modern Art during the past ten years through the Larry Aldrich Foundation Fund. Over the preceding ten years, Aldrich had designated a $10,000 annual fund for the purchase of works of contemporary art, mostly under $1,000. His aim was to clarity the erroneous idea that it is necessary to have a great deal of money in order to acquire and to enjoy living with contemporary art. The stylistic range of the works is astonishing. Their quality, of course, varied. An exhibition such as this demonstrates the possibilities as well as the restrictions of the Aldrich invitation to adventure. Many of the paintings and sculptures were acquired soon after thy ewer made, when prices were low and the artists often unknown.
