Alice Aycock

Exhibited in the original show and reconstructed here, Clay #2 is an indoor erosion bed made by pouring 1,500 pounds of clay mixed with water into a large plywood container. Alice Aycock explains that “over a period of months it dried, hardened, shrank, and cracked.” The artist has spoken of the importance of Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists to her career, noting, “I was a young artist and really wanted to get my work out there. I also admired the women who were in the show and really admired Lucy, so was very excited about it.” Installed in the rear Sculpture Garden is one of the artist’s recent series of large-scale outdoor Cyclone sculptures, reflecting her ongoing interest in nature and the environment.
